Two quotes land in your inbox for the same 7-day Vietnam trip. One is ₹15,000 cheaper. Easy choice, right?
Not always. Once you add the visa, the domestic flight, the cruise upgrade and a few tickets that “weren’t included”, the cheaper package can end up costing more. We see it all the time. So here’s an honest guide to choosing a Vietnam tour package from India: what should be included, the hidden costs to look for, and the red flags that tell you to walk away.
What a Good Vietnam Package Should Include
Every package is different, but a clear quote should tell you exactly what you’re getting:
- Flights: whether international flights are included, or it’s a land-only package
- Hotels: named hotels and their star category, not just “3-star or similar”
- Transfers: airport pickups and drops, and whether they’re private or shared
- Ha Long Bay cruise: day trip or overnight, and which cruise category
- Domestic flights: for example, Hanoi to Da Nang, if your route needs one
- Sightseeing: which tours are included, and whether entry tickets are covered
- Meals: usually breakfast; check if any lunches or dinners are included
- Support: a local contact number you can call during the trip
Hidden Costs to Watch Out For
These are the items most often left out of the headline price. None of them are wrong to exclude, but you should know about them before you compare quotes:
| Often excluded | What to check |
| Vietnam e-visa | Official fee is USD 25 (single entry); check any service charge |
| Domestic flights | Hanoi–Da Nang or Da Nang–Ho Chi Minh City flights |
| Attraction tickets | Ba Na Hills alone is around 1,000,000 VND per adult |
| Cruise upgrades | Overnight vs day cruise; cabin category |
| Peak-season extras | Surcharges around Christmas, New Year and Tet |
| Tips | For guides, drivers and cruise staff |
| Checked baggage | Often extra on low-cost airlines |
| Taxes (GST and TCS) | Whether they’re included in the quoted price |

Red Flags That Should Make You Pause
- A hugely marked-up visa fee. The official e-visa costs USD 25 for single entry. If someone charges several times that without explaining their service, ask why. Our Vietnam visa guide shows the official process.
- Hotels listed only as “or similar”. You should know where you’re staying before you pay.
- Vague sightseeing. “Hanoi city tour” could mean two hours or a full day. Ask for the actual places covered.
- No written itinerary or cancellation policy. Everything important should be in writing.
- Pressure to pay the full amount immediately. A genuine agent gives you time to check the details.
- A price far below everyone else. Very cheap packages often cut corners on hotels, transfers or the cruise.
Questions to Ask Before You Pay
- Are international flights included? Which airline, and how much baggage?
- Which exact hotels and cruise will we stay on?
- Are transfers and tours private or shared with other travellers?
- Which entry tickets are included, and which aren’t?
- Can you arrange vegetarian or Jain meals?
- Are there any peak-season surcharges or compulsory festive dinners on our dates?
- What happens if a cruise is cancelled due to weather?
Private Tour or Group Tour?
Group tours are usually cheaper but follow a fixed schedule. Private tours cost more but let you set your own pace, which matters a lot with kids, elderly parents or on a honeymoon. If you’re planning a first trip, our 7-day Vietnam itinerary shows what a comfortable private route looks like.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to book Vietnam myself?
Sometimes, slightly. But a package often gets better hotel and cruise rates and saves you hours of planning, plus you have one team to call if something goes wrong.
Should my package include flights?
Either works, as long as the quote says clearly. Our guide to direct flights from India to Vietnam helps you check the routes.
What is TCS on a Vietnam package?
It’s a tax collected when you buy an overseas tour package in India, and you can adjust it against your income tax. The rules were revised in the 2026 Budget, so ask your agent to show it clearly on the invoice and check with your tax advisor.
