Almaty Family Trip from India: Kids & Parents Itinerary

Almaty with Family: A Kids- and Parents-Friendly Itinerary from India

Kids squealing on a cable car. Grandparents enjoying mountain views without climbing a single slope. Everyone skating together on an outdoor rink surrounded by snowy peaks.

Almaty is one of the easiest international family holidays from India. There’s no visa to apply for, the direct flight from Delhi is short, and the city has plenty for every age group. Here’s our relaxed 7-day Almaty family itinerary, planned for both little ones and senior parents.

Why Almaty Works for Families

  • Visa-free for Indians for up to 14 days, so there’s no visa paperwork for anyone, including kids
  • Short direct flights from Delhi, around 3.5 to 4 hours, which is easy with children
  • Cable cars do the climbing, so senior parents can enjoy the mountains comfortably
  • Lots for kids: mini-zoo, amusement parks, ice skating and falconry shows

Day 1: Arrive and Settle In

After the flight, check in and let everyone rest. Families with young kids should keep the first day completely free, with just a short walk and an early dinner.

Day 2: Easy City Tour and Kok-Tobe

Start with a gentle city tour: Panfilov Park, the colourful wooden Zenkov Cathedral and the Green Bazaar, where kids love the mountains of dried fruit. In the evening, ride the cable car up Kok-Tobe hill. At the top, there are attractions and a mini-zoo for children, and sunset views over the city for everyone else.

Day 3: Medeu and Shymbulak

Drive up to Medeu, the famous high-mountain ice rink, which is open for skating in summer as well as winter. Then take the cable car to Shymbulak. It’s the perfect mountain day for seniors, because the cable car does all the hard work. Kids will love the snow, and in summer, the cool mountain air is a welcome break from Indian heat.

Day 4: A Kids’ Day in the City

Give the children a day that’s all about them. Gorky Central Park has amusement rides, boating on the lake and a water park, and the Almaty Zoo is right next door. Fantasy World amusement park is another favourite with families. Grandparents can relax in the park or take a slow afternoon at the hotel.

Day 5: Kolsay, Kaindy and Charyn Canyon

This is the big adventure day: the blue waters of Kolsay Lake, the sunken forest of Kaindy Lake and the red rock walls of Charyn Canyon. It’s also a very long day in the car, as the lakes are around 5 to 6 hours from the city, and Kaindy involves a bumpy 4WD ride and a walk.

With toddlers or elderly parents, we suggest either splitting it over two days with an overnight stay in a village guesthouse near the lakes, or visiting only Charyn Canyon. We’ll help you choose what suits your family.

Day 6: Falcons and a Mountain Lake

Visit the Sunkar Raptor Centre for its live falconry shows, which children find thrilling. If you’re travelling between May and October, continue to Big Almaty Lake, a turquoise lake high in the mountains. It sits at over 2,500 metres, so seniors should take it slowly and drink plenty of water. In winter, swap it for an evening at the Almaty Circus.

Day 7: Fly Home

A relaxed breakfast, some souvenir shopping, and the short flight back to India.

Family Travel Tips

  • Passports: everyone, including babies, needs their own passport, valid for at least 6 months.
  • Food: Kazakh food is meat-heavy. Vegetarian families should tell us in advance and carry snacks for long drives.
  • Language: many locals don’t speak much English. Our English-speaking drivers help with directions, menus and small conversations.
  • Weather: winters are very cold and summers warm, so pack for the season. Our best time to visit Almaty guide explains each season.
  • Pace: keep one easy day after every big day. Tired kids and tired grandparents both enjoy the trip more that way.
