Picture this: a cable car gliding up to snowy peaks, just the two of you watching the sunset over the city from a hilltop, and a quiet night in a mountain village under a sky full of stars.
That’s an Almaty honeymoon. It feels like Switzerland, but there’s no visa to apply for, the flight from Delhi takes only around 3.5 to 4 hours, and it’s far easier on the wallet. Here’s our relaxed 8-day Almaty honeymoon itinerary for Indian couples, planned so you never feel rushed.

Day 1: Arrive in Almaty
Land, check in and take it slow. After a long wedding season, the first evening is all about rest. Step out for a gentle walk and a cosy dinner near your hotel.
Day 2: City Tour and Kok-Tobe Sunset
Explore Almaty’s highlights: Panfilov Park, the colourful wooden Zenkov Cathedral and the busy Green Bazaar. In the evening, head up Kok-Tobe hill for sunset. Watching the city lights come on with the mountains behind them is one of the most romantic moments of the trip.
Day 3: Medeu and Shymbulak
Drive up to Medeu, the famous mountain ice rink, then ride the cable car to Shymbulak. Up here, surrounded by snowy peaks, you’ll get your best couple photos of the whole holiday. In winter, it’s a real snow wonderland; in summer, it’s cool, green and fresh.
Day 4: Big Almaty Lake and a Slow Evening
Start early for Big Almaty Lake, a turquoise mountain lake about an hour from the city. It’s a protected drinking-water reservoir, so swimming isn’t allowed, but the views are worth it. The road is usually open from May to October; in winter, swap this for a lazy morning, a couples’ spa or evening skating at Medeu. End the day with a candlelit dinner.
Day 5: Charyn Canyon and a Night in Saty Village
Today you head east on a long, scenic drive of around 5 to 6 hours, stopping at Charyn Canyon on the way. Walk together through its red rock “Valley of Castles” before continuing to Saty, a small mountain village near the lakes. Spend the night in a cosy family guesthouse, far from city noise.
Day 6: Kaindy and Kolsay Lakes
After breakfast, ride a 4WD up to Kaindy Lake, where the trunks of a drowned forest rise straight out of the water. Then visit Kolsay, a calm blue lake ringed by forest. In the afternoon, drive back to Almaty.
Our standard Almaty package covers Kolsay, Kaindy and Charyn in one full day. For honeymooners, we suggest stretching it over two days with the Saty overnight, so it feels like a romantic escape, not a long drive.
Day 7: Your Day, Your Way
Keep this day free. Sleep in, book a spa together, go shopping, or revisit your favourite spot. Finish with a farewell dinner, perhaps trying traditional Kazakh dishes.
Day 8: Fly Home
A last breakfast, some souvenir shopping, and the short flight home, full of memories.
Honeymoon Tips for Indian Couples
- Best time: late May to June and early September for lakes and green mountains; December to March for snow.
- Language: many locals don’t speak much English. Our English-speaking drivers make every day smooth.
- Food: Kazakh food is meat-heavy, so vegetarian couples should tell us in advance, and carry snacks for the long drives.
- Packing: mountains get cold even in summer evenings, so pack layers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 8 days too long for Almaty?
Not for a honeymoon. It gives you time for the mountains, the lakes and free days to simply enjoy each other’s company.
Do we need a visa?
No. Indians can stay visa-free for up to 14 days. Our Almaty trip guide explains what to carry at immigration.
Is Almaty better than Bali for a honeymoon?
It’s different. Almaty is for snow, mountains and adventure, while Bali is for villas and beaches. See our Bali itinerary for couples to compare.
