“When should we go?”
It sounds like a simple question, but with Vietnam the answer is a little different. Vietnam is long and narrow, stretching more than 1,600 km from north to south, so the north, the centre and the south often have completely different weather in the same month. It can be cool and dry in Hanoi while it’s pouring in Da Nang.
The good news? There’s no truly bad month. You just need to match the right region to your dates. Here’s our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam from India, month by month.
Vietnam’s Three Weather Zones
- North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): four seasons, with cool, dry winters and hot, wet summers. Best from October to April.
- Centre (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue): sunny and dry from roughly February to August, with heavy rain and storms from about September to November.
- South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): warm all year, with a dry season from about December to April.

The Best Time to Visit Vietnam Overall
If you want good weather across most of the country, aim for February to April. The north is pleasant, the centre is dry and sunny, and the south is warm without the heaviest rains. It’s the easiest window for a first trip that covers all three regions.
Planning Around Indian Holidays
Diwali (October–November)
This is a good time for Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and the south, with mild, mostly dry weather. Central Vietnam is in its rainy season, though, so keep Da Nang and Hoi An flexible or swap them for Phu Quoc. Our 7-day Vietnam itinerary can be adjusted for this.
Christmas and New Year (December–January)
This is peak season for Indian travellers. The south and Phu Quoc are at their best, and Hanoi is cool and dry. Pack a light jacket, because Hanoi evenings can feel surprisingly cold, and book early, as fares and hotel rates rise.
Summer vacation (May–June)
This is central Vietnam’s time to shine. Da Nang and Hoi An are sunny and perfect for beaches, while the north and south get more rain. It’s a great family option. Our Vietnam family trip guide has tips for travelling with kids and parents.
What About Tet?
Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is the country’s biggest festival. In 2027 it falls on 6 February. The streets look beautiful, but many shops and restaurants close for several days, transport gets busy and prices rise. If your dates are flexible, plan around Tet rather than during it.
Best Time for Ha Long Bay
October to April is usually the best period for clear, calm cruising. Summer is fine too, but storms can sometimes cancel sailings at short notice. Our Ha Long Bay cruise guide explains what happens if your cruise is affected.
